Out of print for over a decade now, Patience (After Sebald) is Leyland Kirby's, AKA The Caretaker, soundtrack to Grant Gee’s film on WG Sebald, and it still feels like one of the more quietly special records in the catalogue. Rather than pulling from dusty samples and old records, this one is derived entirely from a 1927 recording of Franz Schubert’s C.19th song cycle Winterreise, which The Caretaker bends into something blurred, fragile and ghostly. Kirby takes that classical source and stretches it into a hazy, half remembered soundtrack, full of drifting mood and emotional weight. The result is a beautifully fogged out listen, full of memory, landscape and loss, drifting somewhere between soundtrack and haunted reverie. The film itself follows Sebald’s world of art, history and travel through coastal East Anglia, and the music fits that atmosphere perfectly, with a mood that’s reflective, eerie and strangely comforting at the same time.
