Ranking Barnabas - The Cold Crusher
Ranking Barnabas, or simply Barnabas, stands among Jamaica’s unsung dub pioneers, working behind the boards at Channel One Studios through reggae’s golden years. Born Stanley Bryan in Kingston in 1960, he mixed classics like Eek‑A‑Mouse’s Wah Do Dem, filled in on drums when needed, and voiced the mic at night for the Channel One Sound System. Though he shaped countless dubs, The Cold Crusher remained his only album, a scarce U.S. release that’s long been a holy grail for collectors. Now, Italian label Jamdung brings it back after nearly 50 years, newly restored in Berlin by Dubplates & Mastering and featuring liner notes by David Katz and Helmut Philipps, with cover art by Beth Lesser. Sadly, Barnabas passed in 2025 during the reissue work, making this release a fitting tribute to a true studio original.
