Antoine Dougbé remains a near mythical figure in Benin’s music history. With just a handful of releases to his name in the late ’70s and early ’80s, his records are hard to come by, but those who encountered him remember a singular presence, equal parts musical force and Vodún initiate, known as the Devil’s prime minister.

Based in Cotonou, Dougbé drew on Cuban and Congolese influences, but pushed further, folding in traditional Vodún rhythms to create something more distinctive. Despite a reputation for being difficult, he found a natural fit with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, who brought his compositions to life at full strength.

Unusually, Dougbé neither sang nor performed, instead handing his songs to the band to interpret. The results capture Poly-Rythmo at their peak - tight, powerful, and slightly untouchable.

After a brief run of releases and modest success, he disappeared from the scene. Dougbé passed away in 1996, leaving behind a small, striking catalogue that still carries a sense of mystery.
