Riad Awwad - The Intifada 1987
The Majazz Project is a research project and record label borne out of the archive, focused around sampling, remixing and reissuing vintage Palestinian and Arabic cassettes and LPs, shedding new light on the richness and diversity of Arabic musical heritage.
Here the London-based archive label unearth a wonderful DIY curiosity from Palestinian artist Riad Awwad. The Intifada was recorded just one week after the First Intifada began with Palestinians protesting against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. This politically charged backdrop is embedded into Awwad's homemade synth pop sound. Originally recorded to tape and distributed around the Old City Of Jerusalem and the West Bank, many if not most copies were confiscated by the Israli army with Awwad himself eventually being captured and arrested. While Awwad is not around today his music lives on, getting the due care and presentation it deserves as such an important musical artefact.
