Charles Hayward - Smell Of Metal
Hayward, the drummer from This Heat, showcases his minimalist mastery with high-hat-driven beats, creating a unique intensity. In his 1990 CD, “Skew-Whiff – A Tribute To Mark Rothko,” he played all the instruments. Now two tracks from that album are making their vinyl debut. “Lopside” lives up to its name, intentionally throwing off its rhythm. The pacing never really gels, and you get the feeling that was the intention. On the title track, high, airy tones mingle amid Hayward’s precisely timed drumming and a bass line reminiscent of Percy-Jones. The result is a captivating sonic landscape, a testament to Hayward’s experimental approach.
